OTHER CandidateS- positIons on Sunnica

James Bull (Labour)

  • In favour of any renewable energy project.

  • Did not answer the point that 25% of our domestic energy bills is subsidy, to cover the cost difference between conventional and renewable generation.

  • Wants to nationalise all energy utilities.

  • Has not addressed the point that the requirement for subsidy is unaffected by ownership.

Lucy Frazer QC (Tory)

  • Claims to support the project, but not the size.

  • Has not addressed the point that the energy production from this would be trivial, and we would need 70 Sunnicas to produce under 2% of our energy needs.

  • Has not addressed the point that it will produce very little energy at the proposed size, and less at smaller sizes, so it is a bad project at any size.

Pippa Haylings (Liberal Democrat)

  • Was clearly in favour, but then pivoted to be against. Maybe.

  • Put forward incoherent reasons for change. Suggested that she was originally opposed, but increases in solar panel efficiency mean she is now against.

  • Has not addressed the point that the energy production from this would be trivial, and we would need 70 Sunnicas to produce under 2% of our energy needs.

  • Has not answered the point that this sort of thing is central to Lib Dem policy, so we cannot be sure that Jo Swinson will not arm-twist her into supporting it in Parliament.
